Student Government Association

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the heart of student leadership on campus. Representing the student voice, the SGA builds connections between students, faculty, and administration to enhance campus life.

Each year, students elect SGA leaders to represent ideas, lead initiatives, and bring positive change. The SGA President also participates in governance, ensuring student perspectives help shape college decisions.

Through SGA, students gain hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, and civic engagement. Whether organizing events, advocating for peers, or serving on committees, SGA members play a vital role in creating a vibrant, inclusive, and empowering campus community.

MISSION
The Student Government Association is designed to promote the general welfare of students in a democratic fashion and to facilitate communication between the student body, the faculty, and the administration. The student government provides a means through which students can promote interest in student activities both on and off campus.

STRUCTURE

Executive Officers (typically elected by the student body):

  • President: Leads the SGA, presides at all SGA meetings, represents the student body on and off campus, and oversees all SGA activities.
  • Vice President: Assists the President and may step in if the President is unavailable, manages communications and often oversees a campus committee or specific projects.
  • Secretary: Responsible for taking meeting minutes, meeting attendance, and maintaining official records.
  • Parliamentarian: Ensures meetings are conducted via Robert’s Rules of Order, serves as primary contact for SGA officer elections, and distributes meeting agenda items prior to every meeting.

SENATORS
Senators serve as the voice of their peers, bringing forward ideas, concerns, and feedback from their respective programs, departments, or divisions. Senators are also elected student body representatives, tasked with advocating for student needs and voting on SGA matters.

ADVISOR
The SGA Advisor provides mentorship and logistical guidance while ensuring all activities align with college policies and procedures. The Advisor also serves as a liaison between the Student Government Association and college administration, supporting effective communication and assisting with conflict resolution when needed. SGA advisorship is responsible for overseeing daily operations, coordinating events, and managing the overall execution of student initiatives and engagement.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP
All Lenoir Community College students are extended the benefit of participating in all activities sponsored by the SGA. Official membership is extended to every student who pays the student activity fee as outlined in the college catalog. General members contribute ideas and assist in organizing activities.

Every student who pays an activity fee is automatically an SGA member and can attend meetings. Officers and senators are elected to represent students.
Members may attend statewide leadership conferences through the NC Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association (NC4CSGA).

Derek Carrillo-Moreno

President

My academic program is Aviation Management & Career Pilot Tech-Career Pilot Manned. My career goals include obtaining a bachelor’s degree in renewable energies, and eventually a master’s degree. My hobbies are playing soccer and lifting weights; and I love going on retreats for entire weekends. My SGA experience has been great, I have had the chance to network with other SGA officers across the state, and this position has also allowed me to explore my leadership skills in a different context than what I was used to. SGA has helped me improve my networking skills and made me aware of what is happening on campus and feel even more welcome on campus.

Jayla Lee

Vice President

I am a part of the culinary program, and my career goal is to open a bakery. I enjoy playing volleyball, baking, participating in student government, and hiking. My SGA experience has been rewarding; I have recently learned so much about student government and how much the student body needs our presence. SGA has helped me develop better leadership and communication skills, and I have also had the opportunity to work with staff at the school to better understand how the campus operates. Being involved in student government has also opened my eyes to all the active fundraising efforts and activities that the school hosts.

Carolina Bastida

Secretary

I’m an Associate in Science student on the exciting journey toward becoming a med student! While the demands of school and work keep my schedule packed, I’ve found a passion for leadership as the SGA Secretary. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience, forcing me to step out of my shell and become more involved in building a better community alongside inspiring peers. When I finally clock out, you can find me unwinding with a good book or challenging friends to a board game!

Jasmine Raines

Parliamentarian

I am pursuing an Associate in General Education, Pre-Dental Hygiene. My goal is to become a dental hygienist and eventually work in a family dental office where I can help people feel confident about their smiles. I also hope to continue growing in the dental field through ongoing education and hands-on experience. I love staying active, whether that’s going to the gym, helping with campus events, or spending time with friends. I also enjoy being creative with event ideas and adding a personal touch to everything I do. Being part of SGA has been such a rewarding experience. I’ve learned so much about leadership, teamwork, and making a difference on campus. It’s given me the chance to meet amazing people and get more involved in student life. SGA has helped me come out of my shell, step into leadership roles with confidence, and feel truly connected to the LCC community. It has shown me how much impact student voices can really have.
