The Minority Male Success Initiative (M2)

Minority Male Success Initiative (M2)
The Minority Male Success Initiative (M2) at Lenoir Community College was developed to increase graduation and retention rates among minority males and help better prepare them for life at an institution of higher learning. The M2 Program is a tool for enhancing the lives and future of minority males.

The mission of Minority Male Success Initiative (M2) is to increase minority male utilization of campus resources and services through deliberate and intentional interactions between students and the campus community, and to cultivate leaders in the school and community through post-secondary education.

Why should I join?
The M2 Program offers a great opportunity for you to be with peers and with older adults who “know the ropes”. The atmosphere in M2 is accepting and encouraging, and will infuse you with strength and wisdom to help you successfully navigate your time at LCC and your career and life after graduation. We’re here for you to ensure you achieve your goals. We’ll answer your questions and walk alongside you as you take steps toward your future.

Program Benefits
Upon joining LCC’s M2 Program, students are assigned a mentor. Benefits of mentoring are:

  • Improves class attendance
  • Develops responsibility
  • Enhances academic development
  • Provides a sense of community
  • Builds positive relationships
  • Increases exposure to cultural events
  • Establishes goals
  • Provides motivation

  • Study skills workshops
  • Team building activities
  • Social skills workshops
  • Career preparation workshops
  • Personal development workshops

The program goal is to increase the academic engagement and success rates of minority male students during their first year in college. First-year progression is measured by the percentage of first-time fall credential-seeking students attempting and completing at least 12 hours within their first academic year.

How do I participate?
The process for participants begins with filling out an application that addresses their commitment to improve both as students and as male members of their communities. Mentors are selected by area of experience and level of commitment. LCC has established a committee to help identify potential participants, resources and mentors. The committee consists of members of Student Services and faculty from each of the academic units including developmental education, adult education and local business leaders.
