Alexis B. Welch, RN, Ed.D, dean of Health Science Programs and director of Nursing Programs at Lenoir Community College, was elected chair of the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) during its January Board meeting in Raleigh.
A graduate of Mt. Olive College, Atlantic Christian College, East Carolina and North Carolina State Universities, Welch was first elected to the State Board in 2004. She served as the vice chair in 2007 and chaired the Board Governance Committee and is also a member of the Education and Practice Committee. |
In addition to her experience in academic nursing, Welch, has been a registered nurse (RN) for 33 years, is a nursing professional with direct experience in critical care nursing, medical-surgical nursing, home health and geriatric nursing.She also works as a nursing consultant with a long term care pharmaceutical company, Southern Pharmancy Services.
"I am humbled to accept the position as the new chair of the NCBON," Welch said.
In accepting the position, Welch thanked her family, nursing colleagues, coworkers at LCC and her fellow BON colleagues for their support. "It takes a team to implement the mission of the NCBON: The NCBON is committed to protecting the health and well-being of the public through regulating the delivery of state, effective nursing care," she said.
The daughter of Alex Barwick of Kinston and Clara Barwick of Deep Run, she is the mother of four adult children: Jason Welch, Larry Welch II, Kim W. Jones, and Sarah W. Harper.
The North Carolina Board of Nursing is the state agency responsible for licensing North Carolina’s more than 126,000 nurses. In addition to issuing, renewing and reinstating licenses of RNs and LPNs, the Board approves and monitors the state’s nursing education programs which lead to initial licensure, investigates complaints against licensed nurses and maintains the state’s Nurse Aide II registry.
Founded in 1903, the North Carolina Board of Nursing was the first such Board in the nation. The Board of Nursing elects a chair each year. |
