Lenoir Community College Tutorial Lab Coordinator Lisa Shaw says she knows she is blessed by working with students of differing backgrounds.
"I have been employed by LCC for more than 15 years now and for each year that passes I feel more blessed to know I am able to make a positive difference in people’s lives by what I do," she said. "It is such a joy to see the positive outcomes from giving."
Because of the blessings she has received, Shaw decided to establish a scholarship in memory of her parents, Bill and Betty Stump. |
The Betty and Bill Stump Memorial Scholarship when fully endowed will be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Aviation or Art Program who demonstrates academic aptitude, participation in school/community activities, and who shows some financial need. The Stump scholarship is part of the LCC Foundation's Fifty for Fifty campaign at LCC by establishing 50 new endowed scholarships during the college's 50th anniversary.
"It has been 13 years since my mom died, and when my dad passed away two years ago I felt overwhelmed and bewildered," Shaw said. "My parents were so important to me. I couldn't believe they were both gone and that no one would continue to profit from their knowledge and creativity," she said.
"My parents exemplified good work ethics and high moral standards in life. Dad was a B-24 Liberator pilot in WWII; after the war, he returned to Lehigh University to obtain his Ph.D. He became a research chemist working at DuPont for 34 years," Shaw said. "Shortly after marrying, both he and mom were volunteers in scouting and also for our church youth group. Dad had a lot of enthusiasm for working with young people in the Civil Air Patrol in Kinston."
Shaw said her mom was a gifted artist and taught her and her brother to paint and draw from an early age. "She was one of the founders of the Kinston Arts Council and an officer in the January 1965 charter membership. Like dad, mom also continued her education studying art all along the Atlantic seaboard," she said. "They both undoubtedly knew the importance of giving to others. It is because they placed a great value on education that I decided this scholarship would be the ideal tribute to them."
Shaw said she will always remember her parents and the impact they made on her life, but she wanted a way for others to benefit from their lives.
"So I learned exactly how an endowed scholarship works. The benefits from an endowment have the potential to grow by leaps and bounds," she said. "It is simply a joy to be able to give someone the opportunity to go to college and it is not unfeasible that the honored student may one day choose to make a difference for others because of their fortuity. I am also hopeful that others who are able, will be inspired to make the choice to endow a scholarship!"
