Lenoir Community College Computer Information Technology instructors Debra Owens, left, and Gail Edwards, right, recently attend a Microsoft workshop in Reston, Virginia and received training on the new Office 2007, Vista, and IT Professional certifications.

The LCC Computer Information Technology program now has a Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance, which allows students limited access to download and install various software programs used in the classes they are taking on their home computers. Microsoft Official Academic Courses are offered in Security+, Windows XP and Server 2003, and others to be added in the coming months.

Computer expertise, including knowledge of computer applications in database management, spreadsheet, computer repair, networking, and the Internet, is a valuable asset in any area of employment. Better employment opportunities are afforded to those individuals who continue on to obtain their certification in their area of expertise.

According to the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment in computer support specialist fields are expected to increase faster than the average for all occupations through 2012, as organizations continue to adopt and integrate increasingly sophisticated technology.

The Computer Information Technology program is designed to prepare graduates for employment with organizations that use computers to process, manage, and communicate information. This is a flexible curriculum that can be customized to meet community information systems needs.

Course work will develop a student’s ability to communicate complex technical issues related to computer hardware, software, and networks in a manner that computer users can understand. Classes cover computer operations and terminology, operating systems, database, networking, security, and technical support.
Graduates should qualify for employment in entry-level positions with businesses, educational systems, and governmental agencies, which rely on computer systems to manage information.

For more information about the program, contact Owens at 527-6223, ext. 606 or Gail Edwards at ext. 611.
