Dual Enrollment

SLHS graduate Jeremy Falkowski is planning to attending LCC this fall and study Criminal Justice. He hopes to further his education beyond a two-year degree by transferring to either Fayetteville State or East Carolina University and pursue a law enforcement career. "The experience was good because it is definitely a different atmosphere from high school and the fact I could get college credits free was a plus too. The instructors were great and everyone was helpful."

LCC bound as well, BCA graduate Brittanie Taylor hopes to transfer to East Carolina University and study music business with an emphasis on vocal. "Time management is important when taking college classes at the same time as high school classes. Learning how to schedule classes with high school life was almost imtimidating," she said. "It was like life hitting you in the face, but it was such a good experience. I recommend to students not to wait until their senior year. Take classes during your junior year as well."

NLHS graduate Lauren Hudson is also LCC bound where she plans to study liberal arts and transfer to East Carolina University to study physical therapy. "Attending classes helped me get the hang of college. I learned to have to have self-discipline and don't procrastinate."

SLHS graduate Jessica Stroud plans on attending LCC as well and hopes to transfer to East Carolina University or Mt. Olive College to study elementary education. "This experience made me realize what college was like and that I had to be responsible to get assignments in on time."

Attending college while enrolled in high school can be a challenge, but some area students rise to the occasion when they turn 16 so they can get a head start on their college careers. The Dual Enrollment program at Lenoir Community College offers those students that opportunity. Students who participate in the program can attend LCC tuition free, a savings for parents.

Graduates from Jones Senior, Greene Central, North and South Lenoir, Kinston High, and Bethel Christian Academy took time this summer to call their fellow classmates and tell them about the opportunities of dual enrollment.

KHS graduate Matikia Russell said she had a good experience with dual enrollment. "I'm planning to attend North Carolina Central this fall and study Criminal Justice," she said. "By attending LCC, I had a chance to experience college classes and I would definitely recommend juniors and seniors take advantage of it."

NLHS graduate Rachel Miller agreed. "It was the best decision I made for my senior year. At first I thought it would be too much on my plate, but if you manage your time, it can be done. You have to study and do what the instructor tells you to do. I plan to attend North Carolina State, and I'm interested in speech pathology, but I'm still looking at my options," she said.
