Fifth Annual Automotive Instructor’s Update classes held at LCC

In its efforts to remain a training leader for the North Carolina automotive industry, Lenoir Community College hosted its fifth annual Automotive Instructor’s Update Class recently. High school and community college automotive instructors from across the state attended in order to keep abreast of developments and trends within the industry.

Each school that is certified by the National Automotive Technician’s Education Foundation (NATEF) requires all instructors to complete at least 20 hours of continuing education each year. While earning 24 hours of training by attending workshops on topics such as emerging technologies, training and classroom management software, and tool programs, participants shared experiences and challenges from their previous teaching year.

The annual class began five years ago when Gary Clements, dean of Business and Industry Programs, saw this need for local high school instructors. It was an immediate success that continues to attract instructors from all over the state.

Chris Jenkins, head of LCC Automotive Programs, says that he is very pleased with the success of this year’s class and he is looking forward to next year. “LCC’s automotive program is a NATEF Master Certified program and that makes this the perfect place to hold such an event,” he said.

Corporate partners who provided workshops for day one this year were Chris Ongaro of Snap-On Tools who presented NATEF management software and William Southerland of Standard Motor Products who presented training on the programming of vehicle computers.

Bill Burgess of Carolina Training Associates presented on training equipment and virtual lab software systems. Perry Greene of Matco Tools discussed tool programs followed by a presentation by Chris Jenkins on emerging technologies and trends in the automotive industry. The group then toured LCC’s new Automotive Customizing Program’s facility, which is the only such program in the state.

The Automotive Technology Instructors Association of Eastern North Carolina held its annual meeting to conclude this event. The association was established to provide a means of providing training for the members and to increase public awareness of career opportunities in the automotive industry.

The association held its annual meeting after the class and elected the following officers for the upcoming year: David Ginn of Greene Central High School, president, James Cox of South Johnston High School, vice-president, and Donald Stanley of South Lenoir High School, secretary-treasurer.
