Dual Enrollment

Area high school students from Lenoir, Jones and Greene counties recently participated in contacting their fellow students about the Dual Enrollment program at Lenoir Community College.

The Dual Enrollment program at LCC provides the opportunity for local high school students to enroll in college courses and the best part - it's tuition free.

To be a dual enrolled student, high school students must be 16 years old, taking at least three courses at their high school and of course, must be making progress toward graduation. The student must also get permission from his or her high school principal. The student must meet the prerequisites for the courses they choose. Not all courses are available for dual enrollment. Students may not take developmental courses.

Dual Enrollment is not only advantageous to students by enabling them to earn college credit while they are in high school, but it is also advantageous to the parents since dual enrolled students pay no tuition.
Students earn college credit tuition free. They only pay for books and supplies associated with the classes they are enrolled in. LCC provides a college transcript of courses completed upon request and forwards that transcript free of charge to any college the student chooses.

Those who participated in calling their fellow students also participated in the Dual Enrollment program as seniors.

"I really enjoyed taking the Internet class," Bethel Christian Academy graduate Emilie Bishop said. "For me the challenge was finding the time to be in the classroom while enrolled in high school, but Internet classes made it easier."

North Lenoir High School graduate Emily Dawson said the biggest challenge for her as a dual enrolled student was balancing both levels of courses. "I had to really buckle down and study."

Fellow North Lenoir High School graduate Katie Maloney agreed. "The program gave me a view of college life - how to study and prepare for tests."

Greene Central High School graduate Tony Tyson said by taking Graphic Arts classes, he had an opportunity to explore the career before actually deciding if that is what he wanted to do as a career. "The college classes allowed me to be creative."

Arendell Parrott Academy graduate Neha Patel enrolled in two LCC Spanish classes while attending high school. "It was a good opportunity."

Jones Senior High School graduate Charmeer Lewis took two English classes, a math and a religion class. "It was challenging, but I tried to stay ahead."

Kinston High School graduate Kennedy Brown also participated in dual enrollment classes and helped by contacting fellow classmates to tell the program.

Others participating were Dan Grimes and Judah Emory, both of South Lenoir High School, Madison Gray of North Lenoir High School, Arielle Jones, Kinston High School, Daniel Vines, Greene Central High School, and Whitney Ward, Jones Senior High School.
