Six members and advisers of Omicron Rho, the Lenoir
Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society attended the society’s
2006 Regional Convention in Clemmons, NC.
Workshops and training seminars were conducted as
more than 75 chapters competed for regional recog-
nition. Essays, nominations, and reports were prepared
and submitted for each area of competition and sent
to judges across the United States.
Omicron Rho received 13 awards and was recognized
in all areas of competition. With top scores in the
society Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, and
Service, Omicron Rho was recognized as the Most
Distinguished Chapter of the Region, First Runner Up,
in total ranking in North and South Carolina.

The chapter received “Five-Star Status” for the fourth consecutive year, recognizing the highest level of performance in all Phi Theta Kappa programs. The Carolinas Region Service Project Award was presented to recognize activities and programs relating to the service topic “Conquering Cancer: Linking the Gap to the Cure.” The chapter also received the Distinguished Chapter Award, which is presented only to chapters which have excelled in all Hallmark categories.
Omicron Rho was named a Carolinas Super Star Chapter for demonstrating outstanding performance in the Five-Star Chapter Development Program, the International Service Program, the Pinnacle Membership Program, the Leader of Promise Program, and for attending five or more regional/international events. The Best Use of Honors Topic Award was awarded for Omicron Rho’s innovative and educational programs and events related to the Honors Study Topic: “Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are” and for participation in the society’s Satellite Seminar Series.
Omicron Rho also received Honorable Mention for “Christmas: My Wish” in the Bruce R. Rallis Regional Service Award competition. This award is presented to the chapter, which has accomplished the most outstanding service project during the preceding year.
Individual awards were presented and chapter members recognized as Jacquelene Meadows, Vice-President of Leadership, was named to the Carolinas Hall of Honor and was also recognized as a Distinguished Chapter Officer. Amanda Stroud was awarded a trophy for outstanding leadership as Distinguished Chapter President.
Dr. Brantley Briley was recognized as Distinguished College President for exemplary support to Phi Theta Kappa and Omicron Rho.
The Horizon Award for new or senior advisors who have attained new levels of achievement was presented to Carolyn Crossland. Crossland also won the Carolinas Region Distinguished Advisor Award for outstanding work with Omicron Rho, the community, other community colleges, and the Carolinas region.
