Lifelong learning is an idea that permeates the activities of the Lenoir Community College’s Jones County Center. Lifelong learning is an attitude that is exemplified by the partnership between the Jones County Senior Center and LCC’s Jones County Center.
The partnership encourages seniors to remain receptive to novel concepts, abilities and actions. The concept of lifelong learning encompasses various frameworks including formal college classes and leisure activities.
This partnership provides opportunities for intellectual, cultural exploration and development for men and women of retirement age. In addition to providing basic skills classes, craft classes and more, a recent Heritage Arts Production basketry class was a delightful success.
Each participant was able to complete a napkin basket under the instruction of Karen Carden. Student abilities varied and the stronger amongst them became facilitators to those who were less skilled. The collegial efforts of the participants and instructor formed a positive environment where all members of the class were supported to successful outcomes.

Basket maker Karen Carden and blind student Samuel Gaskill help each other to “see” the results of their efforts.
