The Dirt Daubers Garden Club is not just about gardening and the outdoors, but it is also about community service and the area chapter is big on helping the community.

The club recently awarded two scholarships through the Lenoir Community College Foundation in the areas of Horticulture and Culinary. The students who received the scholarships were Alan Whitley of the Culinary Program and Cameron Steele of the Horticulture Program.

The proceeds from the club's Spring Extravaganza funded the two scholarships. The Spring Extravaganza was an event held at the Ned Grady family home where different cultures were represented through flowers, foods and other venues. Students from the LCC Culinary and Horticulture programs assisted the garden club in making the event successful.

Club Past President and Chair of the Spring Extravaganza Brenda Grady made the presentation saying the members felt that providing scholarships to students was the most beneficial use of the funds.
"We feel that Lenoir Community College is one of our major economic engines in eastern North Carolina," she said.

The Dirt Daubers Garden Club was established in June 1953. The organization meets the first Wednesday of the month. For more information, call Grady at 522-0155.
