Carolyn Crossland, Lenoir Community College music faculty member and Omicron Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa advisor, has been recognized as the Distinguished Chapter Advisor in North and South Carolina, and was subsequently recognized at the 2006 international convention in Seattle, Washington.
Crossland received her master of music degree in conducting and organ performance from East Carolina University. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in organ performance from Campbell University, and cum laude with an Associate of Arts degree in piano performance from Anderson University.

She has done additional post graduate study at the Royal School of Music in London, England, the Italian Organ Academy, Haydn Conservatory (Austria), Illinois State University, Westminster Choir College, Duke University, Stetson University, Pennsylvania State University, and is a certified leadership and management skills instructor.

At LCC since 1992, she is director of the music faculty. She is also the minister of music at Westminster United Methodist Church. She has been listed in “Outstanding Young Women of America” for three years, “Who’s Who in Music and Musicians-Classical,” “International Who’s Who in Music,” “Personalities of the South” in music, “Outstanding Service to the Teaching Profession” and has been named “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” every year from 2002 to 2006. She received the LCC president’s award for service and innovation to the college in 1999, and the 2002 LCC Teaching Excellence Award.

She has been recognized for her work with Phi Theta Kappa by twice receiving the International Paragon Award, the Robert Giles Distinguished Advisor Award, Advisor Continuing Excellence Award, and Phi Theta Kappa Horizon Award (annually from 2001-2006).

Crossland became chapter advisor of Omicron Rho in 1996. Although the chapter had been chartered in 1968, it had neither been active beyond the local level nor participated in international service projects, honors topics or five star programs offered by international headquarters. Under her leadership, Omicron Rho now participates in all Phi Theta Kappa programs at the highest, five star level, and was ranked the second chapter in all of North and South Carolina, winning 13 chapter awards.

This year more than 500 chapters from around the United States and foreign countries competed for the society’s most coveted awards. The Hallmark Awards Program is the society’s awards competition and annually recognizes excellence in programs that promote the PTK Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, and Service.

Crossland has inspired chapter members to become involved with other area Phi Theta Kappa chapters. Omicron Rho now has three sister chapters, Pitt Community College, Wayne Community College, and Edgecombe Community College. Crossland has helped Omicron Rho actively become involved in uniting the LCC campus in projects such as “Ribbons for Relief,” “Voice Your Vote,” and “Christmas: My Wish.”

Under her leadership, chapter membership has grown, members have become more involved, and programs have been implemented benefiting the college and the community.

In Crossland's nomination an anonymous quote stated that, “A good teacher is like a candle. It extinguishes itself to light the way for others.” Chapter members said “Under her leadership, we caught a spark from her candle and, working together, aimed for and achieved more than we ever thought possible.”
