Students in the GED and adult high school programs at the Jones County Center in Trenton, with assistance from staff members, wanted to honor their instructor Fred Seymour in a unique way.
Seymour recently lost his mother, Jane, and was away from his students for about two weeks. In an effort to express their sympathy and appreciation to Seymour, his students went to work and planted a garden in memory of Seymour's mother.
LCC Machining Program Head Paul Hill created a memorial plaque.
The garden has yielded peppers, eggplants and more. According to his students, Seymour even cooked up some "Yankee” fare for us here in Jones County using the produce from his gift."
"The symbolism of this living gift touches all those who pass it daily," LCC Jones County Center Director Lysa Kosak said.
Kosak said that Seymour's success is measured by his students. A recent success under the tutelage of Seymour is Ashley Stanley. "She persevered and achieved her adult high school diploma while maintaining a job and supporting her classmates in their studies," Kosak said. "Her dedication served a wonderful example to her peers. We appreciated her positive attitude, dedication, and friendly smile. We are very proud of her. She plans to continue her studies at LCC to get a college degree."

Students admire the handy work of the garden that was created to honor Fred Seymour, an instructor at the Lenoir Community College Jones County Center.
