West Pharmaceutical Services is making it easier to attend college. The company endowed three scholarships at Lenoir Community College.

West gave LCC $48,000 for the endowments. The company donated $3,000 so the college can begin awarding the grants soon.

Three scholarships will be awarded every year. Priority will be given to West employees and their family members, then to community members.

"We are pleased that the management at West Company values education and understands that Lenoir Community College is able to add value to their organization," LCC President Brantley Briley said. "This is another example of a private-public partnership that creates a win-win situation for everyone."

West recognized that endowing a scholarship at LCC was "a great thing for our employees and a great thing for the community," said West plant manager Troy Player said.

"It's an important thing for the community," he said. "We're investing in our economic future in this community."

More people going to college will mean a larger, trained workforce for West and other industries that decide to come to Kinston. The scholarships may also mean more opportunity for people who want higher education.

"It may allow people to go to college that may not have gone otherwise," Player said.
