LCC Welding Students Win at State Competition

Lenoir Community College Welding Technology students Chris Taylor and Alvin Bazley competed in SkillsUSA state wide competition held in Greensboro, taking home both first and fifth place.

Bazley, a first semester freshman and former Marine from Louisiana earned fifth place, and Taylor, a sophomore from Belgrade, took home the gold in the annually held competition hosted by SkillsUSA.
SkillsUSA is a national organization supporting both high school and postsecondary college and technical students enrolled in trade, technical and skilled service instructional programs.

“ I don’t know who was more excited, me, Alvin or Chris, but I’m proud of them both,” LCC Welding Program Head John Cavenaugh said. “I really felt Chris had a good chance to win and with Alvin coming in fifth, that was quite an accomplishment, as he’s only been welding a few months.”

With the first place finish, Taylor will next compete at the national level, in Kansas City, MO this June.

“Chris is a very capable welder and I feel he will do an excellent job at representing the college in the national competition,” Director of Industrry and Public Service Gary Clements said. “John Cavenaugh is also to be commended for the great job he is doing with the students in the Welding Program.”
