Fodie H. Hodges Memorial Scholarship Endowed

The family of Fodie H. Hodges, long-time friend of the community and Lenoir Community College, has recently endowed a scholarship through the LCC Foundation.

The Fodie H. Hodges Memorial Scholarship has been endowed by his wife, Anne Parker Hodges and his daughters, Carol Anne Hodges Rosemond and Betsy Hodges Gwin.

An educator for 42 years, Hodges was well known in the educational community. In September 1982, Hodges retired from the college after 18 years of service. He served as dean of adult education from 1964-1966, academic dean from 1966-1968, dean of student affairs in 1968-1969, dean of continuing education in 1969-1970, director of student activities from 1970-1976. He also served as associate dean for continuing education and assumed duties as director of the College Union in September 1977 until his retirement.

Hodges received his undergraduate degrees from East Carolina University and also attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Columbia University in New York for additional graduate studies. He was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corp - 6th Division, 22nd Regiment. He served in the Pacific during World War II. He received the Purple Heart twice, the Silver Star for gallantry, and the Bronze Star twice for bravery. After the war, he was principal of Belvoir School and Chicod School in Pitt County. He moved to Kinston in the mid 1950s and became principal of Harvey School.

While working at Harvey School, he helped with the organization of the Junior High School. Hodges and his wife, Anne, owned and operated Hodges Motel and Beach Cottages at Buxton, NC on Cape Hatteras for 45 years.

Before his retirement at LCC, he was active in the community. He served as president of the Kiwanis Club, the Kinston Arts Council, director of the NCAE, and many other educational organizations. He served as president of the ECU Alumni Association and director of the Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce, Good Neighbor Council, United Way Public Service Committee, and the American Red Cross. He was listed in the Who's Who in American Education.
