Lenoir Community College kicks off its Health Lecture Series with Dr. Marshall Jay Barker of Kinston's Women's Clinic at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Administration Building Auditorium.
Barker will be speaking on Preventing Cancer, Inflammation and Chronic Disease in Women - Antioxidants, Their Role in Women's Health. The series is sponsored by the LCC Cultural and Performing Arts Committee. An active member of the Lenoir Memorial Hospital staff since 1984, he received his bachelor of science in Biology from Atlantic Christian College, his bachelor of science in Medical Technology from Medical College of Virginia and his doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the WV University School of Osteopathic Medicine. He received his Obstetrics and Gynecology education from Pensacola Graduate Medical Education Program, Erlanger Medical Center of the University of Tennessee and St. Francis Medical Center from the University of Illinois. Passionate about wellness and healing, Barker is a true believer in the power of education to help people have more control over their health by understanding the relationship between nutrition and disease. He will be discussing the value of alternative medicine as nutritional support to help enhance the integrity of health at the cellular level. He said his mission in life is to help reduce the incidence of breast cancer. He will also be discussing the role that nutrition plays in one's health. He holds active medical licenses in North Carolina and Tennessee and is board certified in Obstetrics/Gynecology. Barker holds membership in numerous organizations including the American Medical Association, North Carolina Society, Lenoir-Greene County Medical Society and the American College of OB/Gyn. He has served as an assistant Scout Leader, teaches martial arts, is active in the Teenage Youth Ministry at St. Mary's Episcopal Church and currently is an active board member at St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
