LCC Clubs
Join Forces to Raise Money for Breast Cancer
For the
fifth year, the Human Services Club at Lenoir Community College recently
completed the community service project to increase breast cancer awareness.
This was the third year that the club also included a fund-raising component
to the campaign. The LCC Omicron Rho Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa also participated.
"During 2002 203,500 new cases of breast cancer were detected among
women in the United States," according to the National Breast Cancer
Awareness Center.
Members of both clubs sold pink balloons with the goal of raising more
money then last year's fund drive for the American Cancer Society. This
year the club raised more than $500, an increase from last year's campaign.
The club released the balloons in honor of the memories of the many people
who have been affected by breast cancer.
Raymond Howard, president of the Human Services Club, thanked all the
club members for their hard work and challenged them to continue to work
to improve the community. The Rev. James Powell led the group in prayer
and a moment of silence to remember those who had lost the battle with
cancer.
More than 300 balloons were released to commemorate the occasion. "This
club continues to work hard to help others, " said LCC Human Services
Technology Program Head Robert Van Meir. "Their devotion to and ability
to find ways to help others is what human service is all about".
LCC Phi Theta Kappa adviser Carolyn Crossland said this is the start of
the two organizations working together on community project. "We
hope to find ways to help the people in our community in profound ways".
