Blizzard Honored With Scholarship

Miss Mildred Dare Blizzard was recently honored by her family with the endowment of a scholarship in her name through the Lenoir Community College Foundation. The interest from the endowment will pay the tuition for two students each year.

A native of Deep Run, Miss Blizzard is the oldest of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Blaney B. Blizzard. Her family says she was an excellent student and was always eager to learn. She was considered a joy to her teachers as well as an inspiration to her classmates.

Miss Blizzard graduated as salutatorian of her 1936 Deep Run High School class. She was a charter member of the Beta Club. She graduated from Atlantic Christian College (Barton College) in 1940, as a member of the Golden Knot Honor Society and was also president of the Woman’s Dormitory Council.

Mildred Dare Blizzard has been in education all of her life. Upon graduation from ACC, she began teaching at Calypso High School in Duplin County. She later taught at New Hope High School in Wayne County and Snow Hill High School in Greene County, and ended her teaching career at Pink Hill Elementary School when she retired in 1982.

During her 42 years of teaching, she influenced numerous students’ lives. Her family says she treated each child as her own. She loved every one and had a way of giving them enough self confidence to open their minds towards developing their full potentials.

Miss Blizzard said her educational philosophy was just to see children as God-given gifts and to love them, to help them set high standards for themselves and look for the beauty in life.

Since 1982, she has been a familiar face in the Lenoir County nursing homes while serving on the Nursing Home/Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee, and she is a loyal member of Deep Run Original Free Will Baptist Church.

The lifelong teacher continues to be involved in the community. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Lenoir County Retired School Personnel, the Lenoir County Historical Association, and AARP.
