Theta Kappa Adviser Receives Regional Distinguished Chapter Adviser Award

Community College Music Faculty Carolyn Crossland was recently named Distinguished
Chapter Adviser of the Phi Theta Kappa Carolinas Region. LCC's Omicron
Rho Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is one of 72 in the two state region.
Phi Theta Kappa was established in 1918 and is the only internationally
acclaimed honor society serving two-year institutions which offer associate
degree programs. The organization is recognized by the American Association
of Community Colleges as the official honor society for two-year colleges.
There are 1.5 million members and more than 1,200 chapters in the United
States, Canada and Germany. The purpose pf Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize
and encourage scholarship among associate degree students. To achieve
this purpose, the organization provides opportunity for the development
of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas,
and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of
interest in continuing education.
Crossland holds a Masters of Music from East Carolina University in Conducting
and Performance, a Bachelor of Arts from Campbell University (Magna cum
Laude) in Organ Performance and an Associate in Arts from Anderson College
(cum laude) in Piano Performance. She has done additional post graduate
study at the Royal School of Music (London, England), Italian Organ Academy,
Haydn Conservatory (Austria), Illinois State University, Duke University,
Westminster Choir College, Stetson University, and Pennsylvania State
University. She is certified leadership and management skills instructor.
Crossland produced and performed in two commercial recordings: "The
Fabulous 4 Take 1" and "Finally 4."
In addition to her teaching responsiblities at LCC, she serves also as
the sound and lighting technician for college events, produces, directs
and conducts major musical concerts and is the adviser for Phi Theta Kappa
International Honor Society.
Prior to coming to LCC, she was music faculty at Mount Olive College where
she also served as a sound and lighting technician, produced, directed
and conducted major musical events. She was also a music instructor at
East Carolina University. She is currently the Minister of Music at Westminster
United Methodist Church where she supervises Children's Music Ministry
and Liturgical Dancers and composes and arranges music for performance.
She has received numerous honors in addition to the Distinguish Chapter
Adviser Award. They include Outstanding Young Women of America for three
years, Who's Who in Music and Musicians-Classical, International Who's
Who in Music, Personalities of the South (music), and Outstanding Service
to the Teaching Profession. She was awarded the President's Award for
Service and Innovation to the College - 1999, the Horizon Award (Regional)
Phi Theta Kappa - 2001, 2002, 2003, the Paragon Award (International)
Phi Theta Kappa - 2002, Excellence in Teaching Award - Lenoir Community
College 2002, and National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development
award 2003.
