| This on-line orientation should be viewed by all prospective students and
repeat students. No matter which course you enroll in, this information will
be helpful and will help you be successful in your Internet Based Courses. If
you are not going to be attending the on-campus orientation, please follow the
procedures outlined below. |

| Do I have to come to campus for anything? |
| Most courses require that you come to campus for the orientation session.
Sometimes circumstances prevent that. You are NOT required to come to campus
unless the instructor mandates a campus visit for testing, counseling, or any other
necessary meeting. A major percentage of the course is conducted via the
Internet. |

| How do I get books and
other resources? |
| Provisions for books, materials etc. will be made prior to the first class
meeting. For a more detailed listing of what services Lenoir Community College
provides to distance education students, please refer to the Distance
Education Student Guide. |

| How do I gain access to
the on-line course? |
| (Instructor email addresses can be found by going to the Distance Education, schedule page for the current semester and clicking on the course that you are enrolling in. The instructor's name will be on the course schedule page with a link to their email address. You may click on the instructor link to send email if your computer is configured to do so (Note: frequently public access computers may not be configured properly to send email from Internet links) or copy the email address carefully and enter it as the address in the program you use to send email). |

| Once you have signed up and registered for your course, e-mail your instructor
the following information: |
- Your full name and the name you will go by for the class
- Your Student ID number (to assure that you are registered)
- Your primary e-mail address & any other e-mail address your instructor
can reach you
- Your phone number and the best time to reach you by phone
- Your curriculum (if applicable)
- Kind of computer (web browser, e-mail software, word
processing) you'll use for class
- The name of your Internet service provider (ICOM, Earthlink, LCC, SuddenLink) |

| You will then be given the username and password for the course. Students
MUST be registered for the course in order to have access to the course and the
course components. Access to the discussion forum, etc. will be given once the
course begins. Each student that is required to use the discussion forum will
be given a password. |

| On the first day of class you should: |
- Go to the Distance Education home page
- Click on the schedule for the current semester
- Click on the course that you have enrolled in
- Examine the course syllabus
- Examine the course schedule & assignments page - Examine first course session page
- Contact your instructor with questions/comments you have about
the course or web site
- Another good tip is to print the pages to have a back up of assignments just in case |

| How do I view PowerPoint
presentations? |
Internet on-line instruction involves the integration of the
following elements: computer and Internet access to Blackboard http://disted.lenoircc.edu,
required textbook reading, timely completion of assignments, submission of
assignments to instructors via email,
and regular (at least once a week) communication
with instructors. Instructors evaluate assignments received from students
and email the evaluation results to the students.
To participate in Internet/on-line,
students must have the hardware and/or software
listed below:

| How do I get
started with my Internet Based course? |
Some of the classes may contain PowerPoint presentations that will need to
be viewed. Usually the presentation slides will be converted to HTML so that
you can view them in your browser. Sometimes the instructor will have you
download the presentation and
view the slides also. If you do not have
PowerPoint on your computer, you will only
need to download the viewer in order
to view the slides. The viewer can be found on

- Home computer or use of computers in LCC computer
lab or Learning Resources Center
- Access to required software (if necessary)
- Access to Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.1 or Netscape 4.0 i to

| Once you have your computer, your software, and access to a
Internet browser, you are almost ready to begin your Internet class. |

for accessing Blackboard. These are different from your email username and
password. |
