The following points reflect some facts about taking
distance education courses. To be
successful students must be:

- Timely in keeping assignments current |

- Distance education courses require that you have access to a computer with a high speed internet connection. You will also need to have a backup computer in case your primary computer is not working. The backup computer can be any computer with a high speed internet connection that you can use. Some examples of a backup computer are computers located at the library, computer labs at school, or a relative or friend’s computer. Remember you are responsible for completing your assignments and tests on time. Be sure you have a backup computer available.
- Distance education course students might find it easier to neglect the course because of personal or professional circumstances. The time you spend on the course is set by you, not by the college class schedule. Be sure you have the motivation to follow through and finish.
- Some students prefer the independence of distance education courses; others find it uncomfortable.
- Distance education courses give students greater freedom of scheduling, but they can require more self-discipline than on-campus courses.
- Some people learn best by interacting with other students and instructors. Some distance learning courses may not provide as much opportunity for this interaction as traditional classes, and certainly not the same type of interaction.
- Distance education courses require students to work from written directions without face-to-face instructions.
- With courses in which you communicate on your own time, there usually is not immediate response. The instructor also communicates on their own time. Expect a few hours or days delay in getting responses back from instructors.
- Distance education courses require at least as much time as on campus. Be sure to include the time you would otherwise spend in class and other on-campus activities, in addition to your homework time, when thinking about the amount of time you will need to spend on a distance course.
- Distance education courses use technology for teaching and communications. Be sure you have access to the necessary technology, know how to use it, and feel comfortable learning with that type of technology.
- Printed materials, web pages etc. are the primary source of direction and information in distance education courses. Be sure your learning and communication styles are compatible with receipt and understanding of information from these sources.
Note: Students enrolling in Internet Courses MUST possess the ability to use the Internet and E-mail prior to the start of classes. If you can find your way around this site without help, you should have no trouble finding your way through a Web Based Course. If you have had help getting to this point, be sure you can find your way on your own before enrolling in a Web Based Course. |

to complete. This form serves as a self-evaluation to evaluate the student's
technical knowledge, skills, and aptitudes for success in distance courses.
The form also provides vital contact information for your instructor. You will
be asked by your adviser to fill this
out when enrolling for distance courses
if you meet with an adviser on campus. Students enrolling without coming to
