The mission of the Basic Skills program is to assist adults to become literate and obtain the knowledge
and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency, assist adults who are parents to obtain the educational skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children,
and assist adults in the completion of a secondary school education. The system provides educational opportunities for adults to improve their reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills through five major program components.
The main emphasis of the Basic Skills program is helping all individuals gain the competencies and skills needed to function effectively in society; therefore, even students who have a high schoool diploma may enroll in Basic Skills. Students with a high school diploma are allowed to enroll in Adult Basic Education (ABE) if their skills are below high school level. A limited number of adults who score at the high school
level may also be served, especially in workplace or family literacy classes. High School Graduate (HSG)
is the designation for students with a high school diploma who enroll in AHS or GED programs. Students must be placed in these programs by a placement level. |
