NORTH CAROLINA DIAGNOSTIC AND PLACEMENT (NC DAP) ASSESSMENT
 

Lenoir Community College (LCC) uses the NC DAP to assess students’ academic skills in English, reading, and math. The results help determine where a student should begin English and math courses at LCC. The NCDAP assessment may take up to four to six hours to complete. Students are encouraged to take the assessment in sections over two or three days because of the length of time required.

 

The entire NC DAP assessment consists of:

  • Writeplacer (essay),
      • Multi-paragraphed 300+ word essay on a prompt and corresponding question with a two-hour time limit. Students average taking about one hour to complete this portion of the assessment.
  • Reading,
      • 30 multiple choice questions with no time limit. Students average about 30 minutes to complete.
  • Revising/Editing Writing, and 
      • 20 multiple choice questions with no time limit.  Students average about 30 minutes to complete.
  • DMA 010-030.
      • 36 multiple choice questions with no time limit.  Students average about 45 minutes to complete.
      • If the student “masters” DMA 010-030, then they take DMA 040-060.
        • 36 multiple choice questions with no time limit. Students average about 45 minutes to complete
 
  • The assessment is given at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  No appointment is needed. If these times will not work for a student, they may contact Jason Welch, Assessment Specialist, at (252)-527-6223, ext. 398.
 
  • Students must present a valid photo ID to take the placement assessment.
  • Students may retake the assessment once in an effort to improve their initial scores.
  • Students requiring accommodations due to a documented disability should contact Aniya Sutton, ADA Counselor, at (252)-527-6223, ext. 331.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to review the study guide provided on LCC’s website under “Prospective Students” tab prior to taking the assessment. The LRC’s circulation desk provides students with the opportunity to purchase a hard copy of the study guide for $2.50.
  • Upon completion of the assessment, students will receive a summary of their results and will be directed to the Office of Admissions to speak with a counselor to discuss their course placement based on the assessment scores.
