After a dear classmate, Cora Morris, passed away several months ago unexpectedly; the Lenoir Community College Needle Crafts Class wanted to do something special in memory of this special student. Cora Morris passed away before she was able to complete the quilt she was working on for her beloved grandson.

LCC Needle Craft student Cordelia Baker knew how important the quilt was to Morris, and with the permission of Morris’ grandson, Baker picked up the quilt and began bringing it to class each week to complete the beautiful work that Morris had started. Fellow classmates Carol Kelley, Eloise Helms, Dorothy Chase, Betty Anderson, Evelyn Jones, Rebecca Heath, Carolyn Bullock, along with LCC Instructor Marcia Heath worked diligently every week on Morris’ quilt until it was finally complete.

“Cora really enjoyed this class and would even comment that it was her favorite time of the week,” Heath said. “She is missed and thought of at each class.”

After completing the quilt, the students proudly presented this gift to Morris’ grandson in memory of his beloved grandmother. “He was very touched by what the students did,” Heath said. “I know he will treasure this last gift from his grandmother.”

With more than 10 years of teaching at LCC, Heath enjoys working with the students and witnessing the kindness often displayed by her students. After learning to crochet at the tender age of seven, Heath has spent a lifetime using her needle skills to design, create, and repair clothing and home furnishings for customers all over the Deep Run and surrounding communities.
