| LCC WELDING TECHNOLOGY HOSTS WORKSHOP |
High School instructors from 10 surrounding counties recently participated in a welding workshop hosted by the Lenoir Community College Welding Technology Department.
The workshop was designed to incorporate both the theory and practical hands-on approach to the welding of Carbon, Stainless and aluminum alloys. The classroom instruction included the general characteristics of the various alloys, metal preparation, weld procedures, workmanship and an understanding of the equipment and processes utilized to join Carbon, Stainless and aluminum.
The laboratory portion of the workshop provided an opportunity to actually weld the different metals with SMAW, GTAW and GMAW equipment and also make a project out of aluminum and Carbon steels.
“Even with the economy the way it is, the need for skilled welders continues to be on the rise and pay can be anywhere from $18 to $26 an hour in eastern North Carolina,” LCC Welding Technology Program Head Chris Taylor said.
The workshop was made possible through the efforts of Kevin Schaffer of Lincoln Electric, Tom Wimbish of Airgas National Welders and Eastern Regional Agricultural Education Coordinator Benjie Forrest, all whom served as instructors.
